I'm happy to announce that the items that were stolen from the guild bank was restored last week. Menace is doing a once over to make sure everything back in place.
The items were restored into my bags, everything in my bags was put in the bank or in mail, and everything in my bank was put in the mail. I logged on Friday evening, tried to mount up and screamed when I saw my bags only had the restored items.
Anyway, I'm sure everyone is alert now on account security. I spoke to our hosting service about possible site compromise and they assured me that it was unlikely. Passwords are encrypted on the back end. Not even MMO can view the passwords. Also, our forums use a different means of authentication from WoW.
Finally, keep your account safe. A few tips:
-Make sure your account is in your name or make sure the person who owns the account is trustworthy and can easily produce proof of purchase
-Don't share account info or make sure the person you are sharing with can be strangled immediately if something goes wrong
-Make sure your browser is set to ask you if you want anything installed on your computer
-Make sure you have antivirus installed, running and updated.
-Enable some sort of firewall on your system allowing only applications that you know to send out information (egress rule set) and services that you are familiar with come into your system (ingress)
-When looking for WoW information, don't click on banners.
-Avoid addons that require you to rename a folder in your WTF folder. WTF is where local information on your account is stored. The interface folder interprets how the WTF information is presented.
-Avoid addons that capture information in real time or uploads data while you play.
-Don't buy gold or participate in a leveling service that requires you to submit your account information.
-Don't participate in online services that provide extra info on your character but needs your account information to do a "thorough scan of your character"
-For those using updating programs for their addons, be careful and make sure the addon you're updating comes from a trustworthy source.
Wait minute... this isn't work!!! What the heck!!!!!!
